The Northern Lights, Aurora Borealis, prelude for orchestra was composed for the Kokkola orchestra in 1982-83. Conductor Paavo Rautio, to whom the work is dedicated, conducted the premiere in Kokkola, Finland on December 4 1983. The composition is inspired by the Northern Lights. It is a one-movement prelude consisting three different musical sections. The composer has renewed the work in 2019.
